Maximiliano Rub+¦n Rodr+-guez (Born 2 January 1981 in Rosario, Santa Fe) is an Argentine footballer. He plays as a midfielder, and sometimes as a striker. He has dual citizenship: Argentinian and Italian.He came through the youth set-up of Newell's Old Boys in Argentinean Football League, and played for the club for three seasons before moving to Spain.In 2002 he moved to the Primera Liga with RCD Espanyol. His league debut came on September 2, 2002 in the 0-2 loss against Real Madrid. During his last season with Espanyol he played 37 league games and scored 15 goals. Maxi scored Espanyol's 2000th Spanish league goal. He moved for the start of the 05-06 season to Atl+¦tico de Madrid for G,ª12 million.He won the 2001 World Youth Championship with the Argentine national U-20 team, and has played with the national team since the friendly match against Japan of 2003, including the Confederations Cup 2005 and 2006 World Cup qualifications. On May 6, 2006 he was named as a definite squad member for the 2006 FIFA World Cup by coach Jos+¦ Pekerman. On June 16, he scored twice in Argentina's 6-0 thrashing of Serbia and Montenegro, spearheading their efforts into the knockout stages.In the second round of the 2006 FIFA World Cup on June 24, 2006, he scored the winning goal against Mexico in extra time, controlling a pass from Sor+-n off his chest before scoring a spectacular volley from the edge of the penalty area in the 98th minute. In an official online poll by FIFA, this was voted the best goal of the World Cup.After Argentina lost the quarter-finals game against Germany on June 30, 2006, Rodr+-guez punched German player Bastian Schweinsteiger in the back. FIFA fined Rodriguez CHF 5,000 and suspended him from two matches in the 2007 Copa Am+¦rica for violent conduct. On October the 11th, 2006, Maxi suffered a serious leg injury while playing for Argentina and was ruled out for 6 months.
